Back in the “Egg-Mobile”
We moved the layers back onto pasture today. They spend the winter in a closed shelter to protect them from the cold. The outdoor temperature is now consistently warm enough to get them back outside where they will stay until next winter. We’ll move them every day in this “egg-mobile” all through the spring, summer, and fall.
It is extremely satisfying to observe your chickens pecking on grass and clover and scratching for bugs and worms, clucking little sounds of contentment as they work.
Vocabulary-
Layers: chickens intended for egg production.
Egg-mobile: our portable layer shelter featured in the image above. We learned this name from Joel Salatin at Polyface Farms.
